How to Edit a PDF Online for Free
Editing a PDF used to require expensive desktop software. Today you can reorder, rotate, delete, and annotate PDF pages entirely inside your browser — for free, with no software to install and no account to create.
What can you edit in a PDF?
PDFs are designed to preserve layout and formatting across devices, which makes them trickier to edit than Word documents. However, most of what people actually need — rearranging pages, fixing orientation, removing pages, adding notes — can be done without touching the original text content at all.
PDF Genie Online supports the following editing operations:
- Reorder pages — drag pages into any sequence you need
- Rotate pages — fix landscape/portrait orientation issues
- Delete pages — remove blank pages, duplicates, or irrelevant sections
- Add text annotations — overlay typed text on any page
- Draw freehand — sketch, sign, or highlight with a pen tool
- Stamp images — place a PNG or JPG (such as a signature) on any page
- Merge files — combine pages from multiple PDFs into one
Step 1 — Upload your PDF
Go to the PDF Genie Online home page and drag your PDF file onto the upload zone, or click the zone to browse and select a file. You can upload multiple PDFs at once if you want to merge them.
A progress bar appears while the file loads into your browser's memory. For a typical PDF this takes one to three seconds. Nothing is sent to any server — all processing is local.
Step 2 — Reorder pages
Once your PDF opens in the editor, you see a grid of page thumbnails. Each thumbnail shows a preview of that page.
To change the order of pages, simply click and drag a thumbnail to a new position in the grid. A highlight indicates where the page will land when you release. The order of the thumbnails is the order the pages will appear in your final downloaded PDF.
This is especially useful when:
- A scanner saved pages out of order
- You have merged multiple PDFs and need to interleave their pages
- You want to move an appendix to the front
Step 3 — Rotate pages
Each page thumbnail has a small rotate button (a curved arrow icon). Click it to rotate that page 90° clockwise. Click it again to rotate another 90°, and so on. A full 360° rotation returns the page to its original orientation.
Rotation is applied permanently when you download — there is no separate "save" step. The rotation you see in the thumbnail is exactly what will appear in the downloaded file.
Step 4 — Delete pages
To remove pages from your PDF, click the checkbox that appears in the corner of each thumbnail when you hover over it. Select all the pages you want to delete, then click the Delete selected button that appears in the editor toolbar.
You can select multiple pages at once. This is useful for:
- Removing blank pages left by a scanner
- Stripping cover sheets or confidential pages before sharing
- Extracting a subset of pages from a large document
Step 5 — Download your edited PDF
When you are satisfied with your edits, click the Download button in the toolbar. The browser assembles the final PDF — applying all your reordering, rotations, deletions, and annotations — and saves it to your device.
The downloaded file is a standard PDF that opens in any PDF reader: Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, Chrome's built-in PDF viewer, or any other software. All edits are permanently embedded in the file.
Is online PDF editing safe?
The biggest concern with online PDF tools is privacy — you may be uploading sensitive contracts, financial documents, or personal records to someone else's server. With PDF Genie Online, that concern does not apply.
All editing takes place inside your browser using WebAssembly and JavaScript libraries. Your files are loaded into browser memory and processed there. They are never sent over the network. When you close the tab, all data is automatically deleted from browser storage. There is no server receiving your documents.

Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the text inside a PDF?
PDF Genie Online focuses on page-level editing: reordering, rotating, deleting, and annotating. Editing the original text embedded in a PDF (reflowing paragraphs, changing fonts) requires a different type of tool. However, you can overlay new text boxes on any page using the annotation tool.
What file size is too large?
There is no server-imposed limit. Practical limits depend on your device's RAM. A 50 MB PDF typically loads and edits smoothly on any laptop made in the last five years. Very large PDFs (200 MB+) may be slower to thumbnail.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. PDF Genie Online is built as a responsive web application. It works in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Touch drag-and-drop for reordering pages is supported.
Can I undo changes?
The current version does not have a step-by-step undo history. To start over, simply reload the page and re-upload your original file.
